Welcome to Red Hook’s Music and Art Festival, by Kimberly Gail Price

Note – Celebrating Red Hook 2015 will take place on Saturday, July 25th behind IKEA in Red Hook. All are invited – Free Admission!

Like many communities, Red Hook is defined by the people who have invested themselves and planted roots. In the case of Red Hook, which has faced threatened eminent domain in the 1960’s, a crack epidemic in the 1980’s, and a devastating hurricane just a few years ago, we have proven too strong to be dismayed by disaster or affliction.

The lure of Red Hook is more than the view of the Statue of Liberty. The lure is from the commitment of the people behind the facade of the buildings one sees while passing through.

Celebrating Red Hook is a festival we created to celebrate the amazing and fascinating people behind the magic of this community. Their artistry is only one layer; buried just below the surface of the craftsmanship, I have felt strength, kindness and loyalty.

The draw of Red Hook is the humanity of its people. Red Hookers include people from all steps of the economic ladder. The Red Hook Houses ensure that those near the bottom enjoy the neighborhood as much as the new gentrifiers do.

All are welcome in all parts of the neighborhood. They inspire each of us to reach beyond what we alone are capable of; they shine their inner lights to illuminate the greatness in others.

I’ve never been in charge of something this big. And I am humbled by the support, confidence, trust, respect and words of wisdom I have been offered these past few months. This is not a job I’ve done alone; I was embraced completely by the Red Hook community.

So if you’re reading these words, I ask you to have lots of fun on Saturday, July 25 at Celebrating Red Hook. In whatever capacity you choose to be a part of this moment, you have my extreme gratitude. I am thankful to be sharing it with the beloved community of Red Hook – and beyond.
