Originally a hub for adult primary care, behavioral health, and HIV services, the Sunset Terrace Family Health Center has expanded to become a full-service healthcare facility to care for the borough’s growing families.
The expansion of primary care and the addition of dental services and a new pharmacy are among the new services now provided at the newly renovated facility at 514 49th Street in Brooklyn.
Larry McReynolds, executive director of the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, and senior vice president of community health for NYU Langone Health says the added services reflect the Sunset Park-based federally qualified health center’s approach.
“We recognize the ever-evolving needs of our patients and we have been adept at making changes to improve access to high-quality healthcare in neighborhoods where our patients live,” he says.
The site has state-of-the-art equipment, enabling telepsychiatry, complex dentistry, medication administration, and linkage to all NYU Langone Health services.
“Patients can use Sunset Terrace as a ‘one stop shop’ for all of their health needs. We help patients gain access to the doctors they need and treatment the doctor ordered,” says McReynolds. “Through a myriad of support services, patients can get help to enable them to live healthier lives.”
Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, who secured Federal funding for the renovations and expansion of services, recently visited the facility and commented, “The Family Health Centers at NYU Langone has been serving the community for years, and I am proud to be able to support them so they can continue to expand their breadth and depth of services.”
The Sunset Terrace Family Health Center team, headed by Sandeep Bhat, MD, site medical director, includes physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, dental hygienists, pharmacists, social workers, and counselors.
Eric Doescher, vice president for administration and system integration at the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, has overseen Sunset Terrace’s transformation. “Sunset Terrace has undergone an extensive makeover,” he says. “In addition to expanding primary care, the facility now has a five-chair dental service for children and adults, and offers a pharmacy conveniently located in a beautiful and welcoming lobby.”
A board-certified pediatric dentist will provide dental care for children. For adults, the center offers preventive and general dentistry services—cleanings, fluoride, fillings, crowns and dentures, as well as advanced dentistry for root canals, oral surgery, cosmetic dentistry (whitening, veneers and Invisilign), implants, and treatment for orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.
“Oral health is an essential part of good health,” says Margaret Mason, DMD, vice president of dental medicine at the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone. “Providing high-quality dental services to Sunset Terrace’s large and diverse patient population gives patients and their entire families the ability to receive all of their primary care at one location.”
The pharmacy at Sunset Terrace Family Health Center is open to the public and provides low-cost options during the facility’s normal operating hours, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
“Having a pharmacy on-site enables quicker communication with doctors and patients to get their prescriptions filled and questions about medication answered at the time of their medical visit,” says Daniel Sin, DPharm.
“Many of our patients tell us that Sunset Terrace feels like family to them. With these additional services, they will be able to receive all the care they need under one roof,” said Finn Schubert, MPH, network site director for HIV services at the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone. Sunset Terrace provides a full spectrum of HIV care, case management, and prevention services.
Sean Pavlow, senior administrative director for ambulatory behavioral health at the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, welcomed the availability of comprehensive care at the site. “The new services at Sunset Terrace will ease our patients’ access to excellent health services and support programs,” he says.
Sunset Terrace and all Family Health Centers at NYU Langone accept Medicare, Medicaid, and other major insurances, and provide financial assistance to patients who cannot pay for their medical care. A sliding scale discount program assures patients have access to all services regardless of their ability to pay. On-site health insurance specialists help qualifying patients enroll in this and other appropriate programs.
